What is oceanography? An infographic. click here for full graphic:)
Did you know that seamounts (more or less underwater mountains) have enough gravitational pull to cause localised elevations in sea level in the middle of the open ocean?
The Challenger Expedition.
Between 1872 and 1876, the HMS Challenger sailed large parts of the worlds oceans, and its research lay the foundations for modern oceanography. Some 4700 new species were discovered in the 130000 km she sailed. The modern day space shuttle Challenger was in fact named after the ship.
Above are some digrams of various micro algae discovered on the expedition, as drawn by Ernst Haeckel: i just find it amazing how detailed and accurate are considering how long ago this was and the kind of equipment they were using.
What you might be doing in a Marine Biology/Oceanography degree, part 3.
I’m only speaking for the course I’m doing now, but in any oceanography degree you’ll very likely to be learning about some marine technology, and you might encounter ROVs.
As part of project we’re currently doing here, we have to design our own ROVs using google sketch up to fix a ruptured pipeline. That’s quite a lot more difficult than it sounds as the pipelines usually come in segments of up to 12 meters and you usually have to replace them…
I’ll be posting some pictures of the final designs later:)
Question:
if i were to post more things about me and what i’m actually doing in my marine biology and oceanography degree, would anyone be interested?
considering posting some more stuff like that..
